Caffey Files Bankruptcy

Jason Caffey has joined the ranks of former pro athletes who were flying high in April and shot down in May.

April in this case means the $35 million contract he signed with the Golden State Warriors during his career in the National Basketball Association, and May would be now, when the 34-year-old former forward has filed for bankruptcy seeking protection from his creditors.

According to the Mobile (Ala.) Press-Register, the former Milwaukee Bucks forward filed for bankruptcy in U.S. Court in Mobile claiming $1.9 million in debts and about $1.15 million in assets. Caffey played in 144 games for the Bucks over three seasons, from 2000-'03.

"The only reason I filed bankruptcy was to get these arrest warrants off me," Caffey told the Press-Register. Caffey was jailed this year in Tuscaloosa, Ala., and is facing an arrest warrant in Georgia, both stemming from back child-support issues.

He has fathered eight children with seven women.

"The guy has made more money than he has sense," said attorney Clarence Roby, who represents a Louisiana woman who is seeking child support for two children. "He has not paid anything since May 2005. . . .

He is the epitome of a deadbeat dad." More than half of Caffey's reported monthly income of $7,000 goes to alimony and child support, according to the story. "Who wouldn't have trouble with that after retiring five years ago?" Caffey said.

A lawyer who is defending Caffey in a Georgia child-support case, Jim Altman, said Caffey's obligation of $4,250 a month was not in line with what he is making now. "As an NBA basketball star, he was making millions of dollars," Altman told the Press-Register. "It kind of goes to show how the system fails people like Jason."

Caffey signed a $35 million contract with the Warriors after the 1997-'98 season, which he spent with the Chicago Bulls. But Caffey said his career ended with three years left on the deal, worth $12 million, and that after taxes the deal was really worth $17 million.

He said his former wife, who divorced him in 2006, got half his money. In February 2000, when the Bucks were looking to trade for him, Caffey criticized Milwaukee and said he didn't want to play for the franchise. When he joined the Bucks he said he didn't mean what he said about the city, that it was only a negotiation ploy.

Honestly, who does this guy think he is? This just proves it, DO NOT DRAFT JOKIM NOAH! My prediction is we will draft the guy who is closest in size and skill to Charlie V. as we can.

Florida power forward Al Horford and Gators shooting guard Corey Brewer are expected to work out at some point next week, but the exact dates have not been set.
"We will get those guys in," Babcock said.

Another member of the Gators' national championship squad, 6-11 power forward Joakim Noah, has elected not to work out with the Bucks. Noah already has gone through workouts for Chicago, Charlotte, Minnesota and Boston, and he has workouts scheduled with Memphis, Sacramento and Atlanta.

"He and his agent made a decision it wasn't a workout they wanted to do," Babcock said. "We would have liked him to work out, but everybody has their views on each situation."

I Know Its Been a While Since I Rapped With You All

Hola Amigos! I know it has been a long time since I rapped with you all, but I have been really busy lately. I thought I would publish my thoughts on various topics over the past few weeks onto the Blog for further discussion.

• This Tuesday, May 22nd, is the NBA Draft Lottery, in which the Milwaukee Bucks have a 15.6% chance of winning one of the top three picks in the Greg Oden-Kevin Durant-Al Horford-Corey Brewer-Joakim Noah draft. I have a strong feeling that the Bucks will retain the #3 spot in this draft and have a difficult decision to make as to whom to select. Part of me believes it will be Al Horford, but I would really like either Corey Brewer or Mike Conley, Jr. I just hope the team can improve and be better in the 2007-08 campaign.
• The Brewers are having a fantastic start to the season, but as of late they are having a hard time winning some games against the better teams in baseball. I definitely believe they are going to have their first season over .500 since 1992 this season, but I doubt they will make much of an impact in the MLB playoffs due to there youth and inexperience in playing meaningful games after Labor Day this millennium. Your thoughts?
• What is the deal with the NFL Rookies having a photo shoot this weekend and the Packers going ahead and having a mini-camp scheduled which also coincides with this event. Then the NFL players association not allowing Brandon Jackson to attend the Packers mini-camp and saying either stay home or go to Los Angeles for the photo shoot. Crazy? Right?
• The Office aired its season finale this past week and it was a great episode in my mind. When Kevin was talking with Jim about creating a comparison list of who is hotter, Pam or Karen, I thought that was hilarious. I really can not wait for the next season to start to see how Michael reacts to Ryan Howard being his new boss. Did you guys watch the season finale?

Draft Lottery

One of my least favorite discussion in sports is if a team should be tanking its games to get better draft position. The NFL goes straight by record, it's hard to lose a football game on purpose though, you can get hurt. The NBA you only increase your chances through the lottery. I am proposing a system that the team that gets the most lottery balls would be the team that is eliminated from the playoffs first and then each team follows in place. You can't justify tanking games when you are still mathematically eligible to get to the playoffs.


Boo, to FSN for the Bucks coverage over the Brewers games. I know we're only 12 games in but I feel like I don't know what's going on with this team, other than reading the game reports.

The Weakest Link

While the 2006-07 Milwaukee Bucks season has been pretty unbearable to watch, I thought I would state my case for why the biggest staple of the organization over the last decade has let us down and should be removed. You all are thinking I am going to talk about good old Senator Herb Kohl, the owner of the team, but instead I am talking about the spouse of the national anthem specialist for the Bucks big games, Tim Wilson.

Tim Wilson, the Milwaukee Bucks strength and conditioning coach, has done a terrible job of preparing the team’s players for being physically able to play throughout this NBA season. According to the Milwaukee Bucks website, the injury report shows that ten (10) players have had to sit out at least one game this season and in total these ten (10) players have missed 162 games. That means each player who has been on the injured list is missing on average 16 games, which as of March 23, 2007 has missed 25% of the games played.

If you look closely at the numbers, you see that the biggest contributor to the injury report is Bobby Simmons who has missed every game this season. Even without Simmons games missed, each player on the injury report has missed approximately 11 games, or 16% of the games played this season. In the end, what value does Tim Wilson think he provides as the strength and conditioning coach. He obviously can not either motivate the players to complete a solid strength training program or his conditioning program is not addressing the immediate concerns of these basketball players in the style of the NBA game.

How can any NBA coach, especially the ones the Bucks have hired in the past five years, put an effective game plan into affect to attempt to win games or at least finish above .500. Therefore, I nominate Tim Clavette to become the Milwaukee Bucks new strength and conditioning coach. So Tim, what do you say?
