"Yes, I am a tool!"

Here are my thoughts on the Packers draft: I like our 7th round picks. I guess the plan is to set the record for most dollars under the cap. No Moss, no starting running back, and enough guys to now field three special teams squads. For a good laugh, read this Thompson transcript:
He is such a jerk.

Vargas: The New Victor Santos?

One quick Brewer post before we start the Packer draft analysis week. Honestly, after watching Vargas pitch this April, I can't figure out how he gets it done. I sat there and watched him strike out 11 guys against the Pirates, including three straight after loading the bases. And today against the 'stros, he loads the bases three straight innings and works out of it? He could easily have lost us three of his last three starts, and yet the Crew won all three. I guess that's the life of the 5th starter. Its a good thing he has Charlie Villanueva to bail him out.

Quick April recap:

Four home series, I have attended one game of each and obtained a Game Day Program. Overall record is 2-2, 1-1 in games with Tim, 2-0 on weekday games, 0-2 on Friday Retro games, and 0-1 on games where I tailgated with the opposition.

My Brewers Top 5 has changed to the following:
Hardy (was not listed)
Cordero (was 4)
Capuano (was not listed)
Fielder (was 2)
Jenkins (was 3)
Players that fell off: Weeks (get on base) & Estrada (what was I thinking?)

Enough Already!

Don't get me wrong, I love the ball and glove logo and the old uniforms, but the Brewers need to drop the retro uniforms asap! This year, they are 0-2 already, with an overall record of 6-9 going back to last year since they brought back uniforms back. This is significant since they were 48-33 at home in 2006 overall and 42-26 in the regular uniforms. It just looks like the guys aren't used to them, probably since the are modeled after the loser Cubs home uniform.
And after this season, they have got to drop the 1982 season for at least for 25 years. This stuff is getting out of hand. I like the guys that played when I was growing up, but the team has got to start focusing on the current group of guys (excluding players that wear #41, he needs no focus).
Speaking of #41, yes, he is finally in the minors and it appears that Jose Capellan has returned to the minor league team (he pitched Friday). I would like to see the Brewers and him reconcile, so he can get back to the majors so he can get traded along with #41 for a solid relief pitcher (what ever happened to Ray King, is he still around?) Honestly, has an inherited runner not scored on our bullpen?

Draft Lottery

One of my least favorite discussion in sports is if a team should be tanking its games to get better draft position. The NFL goes straight by record, it's hard to lose a football game on purpose though, you can get hurt. The NBA you only increase your chances through the lottery. I am proposing a system that the team that gets the most lottery balls would be the team that is eliminated from the playoffs first and then each team follows in place. You can't justify tanking games when you are still mathematically eligible to get to the playoffs.

Boo, to FSN for the Bucks coverage over the Brewers games. I know we're only 12 games in but I feel like I don't know what's going on with this team, other than reading the game reports.

Two Tickets to Paradise?

This past weeks American League games held in Milwaukee between the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim vs. the Cleveland Indians of Milwaukee was quite a success. Having attended the game on Wednesday, April 11th I was able to witness numerous references to the movie Major League and contests about Cleveland Indians players I knew nothing about. If you were unable to attend the game, it is too bad because I do not think I will ever be able to get seat that close to any major sporting event ever again for only $10. As you can see we were able to get at least one ball from our great $10 seats. This was the second American League game I saw in 2007, as on Friday, April 6th I was in New York to watch the Yankees take on the Baltimore Orioles. Having now travelled to see games in both Boston and New York in my life, I must say that Red Sox games are way more entertaining, primarily due to the fact they are real fans and don't boo at everything that does not go there way. One of the things I realized from my week of watching Amercian League baseball was how much I miss this and it brings me back to my youth. I started thinking about it more and I think we all should consider trying to watch the Brewers in 2008 play at an American League ballpark. What are you thoughts?

Neutral Sites

With the Angels/Indians playing in Miller Park, I was thinking more things should be at neutral sites.

Reason #1: How about a 17th NFL game for everyone. Each team plays one game in LA, so there's no expansion team there. Each team still gets 8 home and away games. Add a week to the season so 18 weeks. 16 weeks of the year there's a game in LA, between a different of the 32 teams. Or rotate that game in multiple places besides LA, like England, Mexico City or wherever.

Reason #2: Or say this year, Milwaukee could offer the Bucks up to play at different places like Branson, Anchorage, and Cheyenne. No lose situation. Bucks fan's win because they don't have to watch and people in those towns see real live NBA action.

Reason #3: The Badgers really struggled this year with neutral site games. 3 of their 5 losses came not at their opponents arena but at a neutral site. I think they would have benefited from playing in a neutral arena more often. Maybe the 50/50 fan base confused them.

Reason #4: Why even have city names attached to some teams? With the Heat, Diamondbacks, Marlins winning championships with players that were there for only one or a couple seasons do those towns even identify with them? Sure Miami and Phoenix are big time cities but no tradition might as well start a new trend.

NBA vs. WNBA

When I was working out on Wednesday, I was watching the Hot List on ESPNEWS and was surprised how fast the women's college basketball season moves. Here is why I am surprised:

  • Sunday, April 1, 2007: Tennessee beats North Carolina and Rutgers crushes LSU to go to the national championship game.

  • Tuesday, April 3, 2007: Tennessee beats Rutgers to win their first national championship in nine years.

  • Wednesday, April 4, 2007: WNBA conducts their annual college player draft.
Can you imagine what would happen if men's basketball moved this fast, without the series of pre-draft workout camps and rookie season basketball games? Now, if only we can change the NBA playoff structure to closer resemble the WNBA playoff structure where the longest series goes only five games.
