How much will this affect soccer in America?

-10% Detracts interest, MLS teams contract, Leno and Letterman have weeks on end of jokes.
1% Barely a blip in interest, attendance goes up 1 week then drops, Beckhams resort to co-hosting SNL next year for attention
10% Solid increase in interest, MLS looks to expand, Spice Girls reunite?
100% Doubles the fan interest, overtakes hockey, Americans demand World Cup every year?
1000% Ten fold increase in interest, overtakes golf as #4 sport in US, other Euro stars follow?

This is nothing new. Pele played for a team called the New York Cosmos. For a moment in time, late 70's and early 80's, soccer games would sell out Giants Stadium and it was the new hip thing (same time as Atari). There is a really cool documentry about it on espn classic, forgot the name. But where is it now? No where.

So I predict that Becks addition to the MLS would be positive in the short term (10 %) and no impact in the long. Also:

-It will make me attend every Chicago Fire Match when they play the LA Galaxy
-It will increase the number of jokes about soccer on Leno & Letterman since they will make fun of him and the English press, which will go bonkers

I just read, $250M. Unreal. He's not getting it for his performnace; rather, he's getting paid for the advertising money and merchandise sales LA thinks they will make off him.

This might not make soccer popular in the US, but LA Galaxy highlights will now be shown on sports news channels worldwide. Who ever pays to have the logo on the jersey will then get a worldwide ad.

Still, unreal.

Man, that's like 100 million Euros, insane.

Tiger is the only "athlete" "worth" that kind of money.

I was just reading in the LA Times that his "soccer" contract is $10 million each year. Is that what Suppan is getting? The remaining $40 million comes from new sponsorships and profit sharing. All in all, its actually about 193 million euros or 127 million pounds. He would have 2.7 billion pesos if he played in Mexico.

But lets get to the nitty gritty of this whole thing:

"When asked whether the former Spice Girl would resume her singing career, he said she was happy with working on her fashion line."

"Sources tell ESPN's Peter Gammons that Beckham's deal ..."

What the heck does Peter Gammons have to do with it?

Thanks for ruining my Euros joke.

How did I ruin it, I merely provided additional information that someone would not see until after they read your joke.

Honestly, the part I can't figure out how Peter Gammons did not get the scope on this trade at least a week ago.

I have a reputation to uphold, if I don't know my EURO <-> USD conversion, what do I know?

Gammons, yes, brilliant with baseball and rock and roll, didn't know he knew anything about soccer. If he does, my bad, reputation another hit.
