Since the free agent markets opened in the NFL for the 2007 season a few weeks ago I have sat back and initially figured that Ted Thompson had some sort of a plan to ensure the offense and defense would get better through both the draft and free agency. While I think the defense will probably be OK, I have great concerns for the offense after the Packers let Ahman Green go to the Houston Texans and David Martin go the Miami Dolphins (actually based on the contract Ahman Green signed, this was the right decision). I assumed that good old Teddy Thompson would look at signing one of the remaining free agent running backs to help solidify the backfield in what yet again will appear to be Brett Favre's last season as the Green Bay Packers starting quarterback. However, every day I saw one running back after another get signed by other teams as the Packers have approximately
$21.7 million under the salary cap and no real intention of even bringing any bigger name free agents into town to potentially join the team. I understand that utilizing the draft to build you team is important in the NFL, but I am also pretty sure that since 1992 free agency has also been a key component. Ted needs to consider finding some free agents at the reasonable price (by reasonable price I mean by NFL standards, not TT standards) to help build the team in 2007 and the future. Otherwise, I think we are going to see the Packers and Brett Favre struggle on offense like we did in 2005.

Wow, I expected to see a UW number 2 post and a Marquette was hosed post, but instead I see this. My only hope with all the cap money is that somekind of trade is in the works for a a decent yet overpaid starting tailback and running back, or else a couple of first round picks.
If I thought the way I thought when when Sherman was let go, I would state that the Packers are in a major state of rebuilding (i.e. get rid of all the Sherman guys) and to build up an investment portfolio (i.e. horde profits), knowing full well that the games will still sell out and that the team will get plenty of media attention (thus more sponsorship dollars) from the Brett Favre wave.
We just signed Frank Walter from the Giants. I expect this to be a busy Packers week. Probably because Ted saw Egan's post.
My favorite quote of March:
"People say to me, 'Brett (Favre) needs a big target. I know he's got baggage but he's never hurt anybody,' " Harlan said. "Today, they were all, 'Take a chance.'
First off, I think he is talking about Moss versus Rison and I think its his quote versus the fan ones he was reading. But in any event, I thought Moss did run over that cop but she was okay and Rison tried to fight Deon but I wont even call that one a fight. So I guess he is right, no one was ever hurt.
Teb, sign Moss, there is no one else. And ask the Bucks to draft Brewer this year and Conley next.
